FOX Weather is following the cold front sweeping through the Plains and touching off severe weather. It is producing snow in the mountains. And Meteorologist time it out as the storm closes in on the Northeast for the weekend.

One of the season’s first storm systems is in full swing, bringing high-elevation to the , heavy rain and to the Plains and eventually a for a large area of the nation after summerlike temperatures brought .

Millions in the Plains on alert for severe weather on Tuesday

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for portions of Colorado, western Kansas and central Nebraska until 8 p.m. CDT.

Another Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for parts of West Texas until 10 p.m. CDT. 

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was also issued for portions of South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, western Nebraska and northern Kansas until 11 p.m. CDT.

The threats in the watch area include the possibility of damaging wind gusts up to 75 mph, large hail and some tornadoes.

Severe capable of producing large , damaging gusts and are possible from the northern Plains to the U.S.- border in Texas.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has placed areas of and in a level 3 out of 5 on its .

This area includes and in Nebraska and , and in Kansas.

Flooding is possible in southeastern Texas, and the National Weather Service has issued Flood Watches as a result.

Heavy rain is also possible in the and areas in southeastern Texas. As a result, the National Weather Service issued Flood Watches for areas south of Houston. Cities in the Flood Watch include , , , , Galveston and .

The storm system is also creating snow on the backside of it, and higher elevations in the West could pick up a few inches through Wednesday. The bulk of the snow will be found in northwestern , where the highest elevations could pick up 3 to 5 inches through late Wednesday.

The FOX Forecast Center says that by Wednesday, the cold front will stretch from to Texas, which will once again lead to widespread rain along the front.

The bulk of the action will be focused on and Texas, but the cold front is expected to slow down and allow for extra moisture to build into the region.

The rain is welcome in the Plains, and the predicted 2 to 3 inches of rain will help parched areas, but there’s also the potential for some areas to pick up 3 to 5 inches of rain through the week, which could lead to flash .

Thursday and Friday weather forecast

The rain will continue in the southern Plains on Thursday as cooler temperatures begin to filter in from the north.

The will see the rain starting Friday and continuing at times through the weekend.

A snowy beginning

The storm system began to energize across the western on Monday and slammed parts of and with severe weather, including hail that slowed drivers in , New Mexico.

Ski areas, like Brighton Resort in , posted photos of snow in the area to get people excited for the upcoming season.
