A professional Brazilian surfer was hospitalized Sunday in Hawaii after wiping out on Ohau’s North Shore while practicing for an upcoming Pipeline surfing competition. 

HALEIWA, Hawaii – A professional Brazilian surfer was hospitalized on Sunday in after a wipeout on Ohau’s North Shore while practicing for an upcoming Pipeline surfing competition. 

The a 23-year-old surfer was found unresponsive at Pipeline on Sunday. Honolulu Ocean Safety personnel treated the surfer at the North Shore beach before he was taken to a local hospital in serious condition, according to the newspaper.

Chianca is considered the fourth-ranked surfer in the world.

A High Surf Warning is in effect through Tuesday evening for the north- and west-facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai.

On Tuesday, waves were forecast to be up to 25 feet for north-facing shores and up to 20 feet along west-facing shores, according to the National Weather Service office in .

The swell is expected to peak Tuesday in Hawaii and slowly shift east through midweek, according to the NWS Honolulu.  

The northwest swell is also fueling dangerous surf along the Pacific coast of northwestern and Oregon beaches. The NWS offices in Eureka and in California are warning of sneaker waves and large surf up to 24 feet through midweek.

A High Surf Advisory is in place through Wednesday morning for coastal Northern California, including southern Monterey, San Francisco and coastal Mendocino counties.

A High Surf Advisory is also in effect for the south-central coast, including the Curry County coast, through Wednesday morning.
